SQL Backups – Manual Backups

The TASKS area of the backup management screen allows you begin a manual FULL backup as well as run a database maintenance utility.
The restore backup option is used to restore a backup version of your database. This function requires assistance from an RxWorks Support technician to activate. If you require this assistance, please contact our RxWorks Support Team.
These features will use the paths configured for your backup files.

Accessing Tasks For Manual Backups

To access the Manual backups Tasks:

  • Go to the RxWorks Task Panel.
  • Select ‘Tools and Utilities.’
  • Select ‘Backups.’
  • Running a Manual Full Backup Task

    The Run Manual Full Backup option begins the FULL backup operation. This is useful to ensure you have a current backup before running a mass update of prices, or if a backup has failed and you wish to force the backup to run straight away.
    The Manual Full Backup is not exactly the same as the automated Daily Full Backup.

    The Manual Backup Described

    A description of the manual backup operation is outlined below:

  • A backup of the Database file ‘RxMAIN’ is created in the folder ‘RxWorksDatabaseSQL’ on the server. The new backup file is named with a date and time stamp ‘RxMAIN
  • A compressed copy of the BAK file is created and named ‘RxMAIN
  • The BAK file created in step 1. is deleted.
  • The Zipped backup file (‘RxMAIN
  • The manual backup does not include the Restore actions that occur during the normal daily backup. The Manual Backup does not update the ‘Last Successful Dates’ information.

    Running SQL Server Maintenance

    The SQL Server Maintenance will run a log backup and attempt to shrink your database size by clearing unused space.
    You will rarely, if at all, find the need to run this feature. The SQL Server Maintenance will run a log backup and attempt to shrink your database size by clearing unused space.

    Do not run this during peak hours as you will affect the performance of RxWorks. Do not run this frequently as you will affect the performance of SQL Server.

    Reasons For Use

    The log file has grown beyond its normal size due to a large operation being performed in RxWorks. For example – an annual bulk price update.
    We highly recommend you contact an “RxWorks Support Team” Member if you feel this operation is required.

    The Restore Backup Task

    The restore database from backup function requires the assistance of an RxWorks Technician to execute.
