The Foundation - Hardware, Network & Security Minimize

Hardware:  Why Windows Terminal Services

The key to years of a trouble free use of your RxWorks system is a stable platform using good quality hardware.  The core of any networked system is the Fileserver which stores the database and software applications and provides processing power to all the terminals in the network.

Over the years we have found that many serious support issues are caused by a poorly configured network or Fileserver.  Configuring the server to ensure all important housekeeping functions are performed regularly is critical to resolving many of these issues and more importantly isolating practice staff from the burden of IT support tasks.

Fortunately, RxWorks has developed a fully tested hardware configuration that is ideal for veterinary practices. It automatically performs many daily housekeeping operations (like the backup and security procedures referred to below & opposite) which remove many of common problems.

To ensure there are no unexpected hardware/software conflicts, this configuration has been developed for a well known and trusted brand of enterprise server. We also specify PCs, terminals, printers, and other hardware items that are proven to be highly reliable. We will perform an audit of your existing hardware and incorporate this into the new network where possible.

A complete business solution

Our solution provides a productive computing environment to support your business needs.

How?

  • Access and interface to Microsoft Office
  • Configurable email and internet access
  • SMS Text Messaging
  • Global and local address books in Microsoft Outlook for storing practice and personal business contacts.
  • PDF document writer.

Security

Our Windows Terminal Services solution provides many advantages including:

  • Windows Security tools for protecting the environment and data.
  • The use of server based computing where 100% of the data remains on the server and is therefore not vulnerable to corruption by network or replication errors.
  • A dedicated hardware firewall uncompromised by the operating system.
  • Virus Definition files updated regularly.
  • Automatic default printer selection based on geographical selection (very important for branch clinics) with the ability to manually override.
  • Carefully configured user menus based on security group membership.  For example the practice manager has access to his/her own confidential file area.

Remote Access and Branch Clinic Access

The need for flexibility is important in today’s business environment.  RxWorks offers a variety of robust and flexible solutions for working away from the main clinic.  Whether you want to connect your branch surgeries in a Wide Area Network, work from home or even have access to your data in the middle of a paddock miles from anywhere, we have a solution for you.

  • Full multi-branch set-up using Broadband services to create the Wide Area Network.
  • Work from home on your PC via Broadband using a static IP address to connect to your practice network.
  • Use your laptop in the clinic and also at home linked directly to the Fileserver via Broadband
  • Virtual Private Network (VPN) connection to your Fileserver.
  • The RxWorks Mobile Veterinarian allowing the flexibility to go anywhere, uploading new records with the fileserver, when at home or at the clinic.

Here are some visuals to show you how the network might be set up for you:

Server Backup Minimize

The need for regular backup procedures is fundamentally important.  How many car owners can say they have never had a puncture?  It’s not if but when!  We take this issue very seriously and believe our backup functions are second to none.  Here’s why:

·         A fully automated daily system backup to external hard drives which are rotated and removed from the clinic for added security.  There is also additional database archiving.

·         An additional database backup to the ‘backup’ PC plus a further copy back to the external hard drive.

·         In the event of a catastrophic failure, the fileserver can be restored rapidly from the system backup.  In most other systems it can take days to reconfigure a fileserver.

·         Remote backup verification routines by RxWorks support services.
