Guide dogs and those used by other services are typically cared for by private practices. But most Military Working Dogs (MWDs) are looked after by veterinarians serving in the armed forces.
There are centers all over the world that have been set up to provide veterinary care for MWDs. They provide services very similar to those of private practices. And, they are often responsible for training and breeding new K9 recruits.
Features for Working Dog Centers
Keeping Track of Training Status
As well as providing medical care, the centers are normally responsible for training the dogs. Keeping track of MWDs progress through its program is very important.
Centers can use the RxWorks’ custom fields’ capability to hold the current training level. Training history can also be stored in each dog’s medical visit records. A pre-defined procedure can be built for each stage of a dog’s training that requires results to be recorded. This provides a standard protocol, ensuring all aspects of training are tested. The acuity of a dog can be recorded at each stage.
Location Tracking
Most centers accommodate many dogs at the same time who are continually re-located. The location tracking feature in RxWorks helps ensure that the whereabouts of each dog is always known.
The identity of each dog’s handler can also be kept in the patient record.
Deployment History
The location tracking feature can be used to keep a history of a dog’s deployment. The location, arrival and departure dates are kept. Further information on duties and activities can be held in the Notes section of a patient record.
Breeding
Use the RxWorks’ Reports function to create treatment schedules for the bitch. Create your own schedules that match your practice’s standards of care.
RxWorks Procedures can be built for pre-breeding checks. Ultrasound images can be stored in the visit work area as a history record. You can also build schedules and Procedures to test for pregnancy - and create others to monitor progress of the pregnancy.
Efficiency
Centers typically treat a considerable number of patients in a day. So it’s essential to have simple data entry. Ensuring that data is complete is a very onerous and expensive task.
There are several ways that RxWorks helps.
-
Multiple Patient Treatments - Easily record charges and medical notes for the same treatment provided to several dogs with just a few keystrokes.
- Pre-defined Templates - To save time and ensure consistency when entering services and medical notes, use pre-defined sets of treatments called Procedures. One “click” fills in most of the services and the medical record. This not only improves efficiency but also dramatically reduces the problem of “incomplete” records. RxWorks already includes hundreds of templates that cover the most common treatments.
Care of Other Service Dogs
Organizations such as Guide Dogs and Police Departments pay for the medical care of their dogs. They also recommend standards of care for the practice to follow.
RxWorks provides the tools to help a practice follow the protocols for service dogs.
-
Our HealthCare Manager prompts the practice staff on the procedures that are needed.
-
Recall Manager can schedule calls by staff to blind owners to remind them of upcoming treatments.
-
Copies of medical records can be provided to help support the documentation needed by authorities.
